Hey Product Hunt 👋 I know there are already many Chrome New Tab extensions out there, but **newtab01 ⚡** was originally built to solve my own daily browsing workflow. I always felt that most new tab pages were designed like an app launcher — big icons, beautiful backgrounds, and a few shortcuts. But bookmarks are not really apps. A website often has many useful sub-pages, documentation links, dashboards, tools, and resources. A bookmark-based workspace feels much more natural. Here were my original requirements: 1. **A multi-column list-based bookmark layout** I prefer seeing many links at once instead of large app icons. A new tab page should help me organize information, not just look nice. 2. **Keep native browser behavior** I often use the mouse middle button to open many links in background tabs and review them later. Many extensions replace normal `` elements with custom components, which breaks this simple but important workflow. 3. **Open groups of related links instantly** For example: * “break time” websites * work resources * stock/finance dashboards I wanted a way to open a whole set of related links with one action. 4. **Use Chrome Bookmarks as the data source** Bookmarks are already reliable, easy to edit, and synced by Chrome. Instead of creating another database, I can simply create folders for my new tab and manage everything with the native bookmark system. Before building newtab01, I used **Humble New Tab Page** for many years. Recently, while learning AI-assisted coding, I wanted to experiment with something new. I started from my Humble New Tab Page experience and added the features I personally wanted: ✨ Open folders as Chrome tab groups 🖥️ Open multiple pages in split view 🎨 Theme support with light/dark mode and automatic switching 🎨 Import themes directly from tweakcn 🔍 Search bookmarks instantly 🌏 Multi-language support The extension was built with **Trae Work + MiniMax M3** (plus a small amount of DeepSeek V4 Pro) using AI-assisted coding. It took me around two weeks. AI usage: * Mostly Trae Work free monthly quota * MiniMax M3 Plus plan when I needed more capacity * Around $1–2 worth of DeepSeek V4 Pro I usually started with the free quota, switched to MiniMax when there were queues or limits, and used DeepSeek only when both were unavailable.
