Neowa began as an overnight experiment: could I recreate the simple, random connection that made Omegle interesting without building another centralized platform that owns and stores every conversation?
There are no accounts, usernames, avatars, phone numbers, or public profiles. Adults select their age and gender, wait for a random match, and start talking.
The part I find futuristic is the architecture. Cloudflare Workers and Durable Objects handle matchmaking, signaling, abuse controls, and temporary TURN access. Once connected, the browsers exchange messages directly through an encrypted WebRTC DataChannel whenever possible. STUN helps create the direct path, while TURN is reserved for restrictive networks.
The cloud acts as a meeting point rather than the owner of the conversation. Message content is not stored on our infrastructure, and conversation history remains inside the user's browser until the match ends.
This also creates an unusual cost model. Since the users' devices carry most ordinary message traffic, Neowa is designed to remain inexpensive even as it grows to thousands or potentially tens of thousands of users. TURN relay traffic is the main variable cost.
Neowa is currently completely free, ad-free, and not being monetized. For now, it is a non-commercial experiment in privacy-focused, browser-native communication.
The project is still early, and the network becomes more interesting as more people join. I would especially appreciate feedback on the mobile experience, WebRTC reliability, privacy trade-offs, and anything that could be made even simpler.
