I built MutexCam because I kept running into a simple but surprisingly annoying problem: during a video call, there was no single, reliable way on macOS to control both the microphone and camera regardless of which meeting app was used. Zoom, Teams, Meet and other apps each have their own controls, and Push-to-Talk usually only works within the application itself. I wanted something more fundamental: one global control layer for communication. So I built MutexCam. The first version was intentionally small. I wanted three things: a global mic mute, a global camera mute, and a “panic button” that could instantly turn both off. Then I added Push-to-Talk, visual and audio feedback, and a virtual camera that lets users replace their camera feed with a black screen or their own image. The interesting part is that the camera problem turned out to require a different approach from the microphone. macOS doesn't provide a universal way for one application to simply switch off another application's camera, so I built Mutex Camera as a virtual camera. Once a meeting app is configured to use it, MutexCam can control the video feed independently of the meeting application. The whole product was built quickly – I had the core app working in about two days. But the idea evolved as I tested it: from “a global mute button” into a small meeting-control utility designed around one principle: "You should always be able to control whether your microphone and camera are live, with one action, without thinking about which app you're currently using." I built it because I wanted it myself. Now I'm curious to see whether other people find it useful too.
