I initially started Mungr as a way to experiment with WebAssembly, but I quickly realized that WASM is the key to building powerful, zero-friction apps that put privacy first. Around the same time, I started diving into data analytics. I kept hearing the same thing from everyone in the field: about 80% of an analyst's job is just cleaning data. When I looked closer at how that work actually gets done, I saw a massive gap. When you're dealing with millions of records, Excel just gives up. To handle data at that scale, you’re usually forced to write custom SQL commands or Python scripts, or move everything to the cloud. The problem is that for people in strictly regulated industries like healthcare, finance, or legal, the cloud isn't always an option. Traditional cloud tools require complex Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) and extensive IT security approvals before you can even begin. Uploading sensitive files can instantly violate compliance standards like HIPAA, GDPR, or CCPA. On the other hand, writing custom scripts for every single task is a huge time sink. Those scripts aren't easily repeatable; if a single column changes or the data structure shifts slightly, you’re back to square one, rewriting code. That’s why I built Mungr. I wanted to create a tool that gives analysts the power of a data warehouse right in their browser. By using privacy-by-design principles, Mungr handles massive datasets without ever letting a single byte of data leave your machine. It eliminates the need for BAAs or IT approval because it’s a zero-upload, local-first solution that keeps your sensitive data exactly where it belongs with you.
