This started with two PDFs I wanted to merge, late on a Tuesday. The first tool wanted my email. The second uploaded my file and then told me the download was $9.99/month. The third stamped a watermark across every page and called itself free.
The part that bothered me wasn't the price. It was that I'd just handed a document to a stranger's server without thinking about it — and that most people do this every day with contracts, payslips and medical letters.
So we built mousePDF around one decision: don't accept files at all. Everything runs locally in your browser using pdf.js and pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there's no account to create. A nice side effect is that it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
What's in it: edit and replace existing PDF text, merge, split, rotate, delete and reorder pages, compress, sign, fill forms, redact (burned in on save, not a black box you can drag off), watermarks, passwords, OCR, and conversion to and from Word, images, PowerPoint and PDF/A. No file limits, no watermarks on export, 41 languages.
How it stays free: ads on the site and voluntary donations. No subscription hiding in the background, no card details anywhere.
It's not perfect — very large scanned files can be slow, because your machine is doing the work instead of a server farm. That's the trade-off we picked, and I'd rather be upfront about it.
