Metis puts every free geostationary satellite — GOES, Himawari, GK2A, Meteosat, plus Sentinel, on one map, every layer traced to a named source (NOAA, USGS, EUMETSAT, Copernicus, Open-Meteo). Also a full hazard & water observatory: earthquakes, volcanoes, cyclones, USGS gauges, air quality, space weather. No signup, free, open source. Companion to Living Planet (earth.metiscore.space) — my offline NetCDF/GRIB2 tool for gridded climate data.
This one actually started with Living Planet, not Metis. I built that first for teleconnection analysis, looking at how climate patterns tie into inflation risk. Working with that data made it obvious that real-time satellite imagery could be just as useful for research, tracking refinery activity, industrial sites, and supply disruptions as they happen as well as for due diligence purposes.
That's what became Metis: a map pulling every free geostationary satellite (GOES, Himawari, GK2A, Meteosat) plus Sentinel-2, 3, 5 and Landsat can be configured. Data sourced from NOAA/USGS/EUMETSAT/Copernicus, alongside hazard, water and space-weather data. No signup required.
A few of the gallery GIFs illustrate some purposes — they're change-detection on real events (a refinery strike, an oil spill, a tailings dam collapse, the recent Nepal glacier collapse/flash flood, and Anak Krakatau's eruption), which is closer to what I actually built this for.
There's also a full space-weather side, SDO, SUVI, LASCO coronagraphs, aurora forecasts, solar wind and Kp index, all exportable as GIFs too.
Living Planet (https://earth.metiscore.space) is still around too, as the offline companion, runs entirely in-browser, no server, for trend analysis, EOF/PCA and teleconnection regression on your own downloaded NetCDF/GRIB2 files or pull directly from NOMADS.
One practical note: Sentinel imagery uses a shared key by default so it works out of the box — it's rate-limited and meant for personal, non-commercial use. If you're doing anything serious with it, grab your own free Copernicus Data Space instance ID from the layer's settings panel and drop it in.
