Mask is an AI-powered masking tool that cuts anything out of video without green screens. Upload your footage, select what you want to remove - people, objects, backgrounds - and get professional-quality cutouts in minutes, not hours.
hey product hunt!
excited to share what we've been building at megaton ai.
what mask is:
ai masking tool that cuts anything out of video. upload footage, select what to remove (person, object, background), get clean cutouts. no green screen required.
this is accessible rotoscoping (industry speak for cutting stuff out) - traditionally a highly technical, labor-intensive process that's been the backbone of visual effects for decades.
why i built this:
masking and object removal is the biggest pain point for video editors and vfx artists. 90% of vfx is essentially copy and pasting - taking elements from one shot and putting them somewhere else.
look at any behind-the-scenes footage from films or videos - everything's shot on green screens and blue screens because we need clean cutouts. but green screens suck. they're limiting for creators, miserable for actors, and still require tons of manual cleanup.
i want to kill the green screen.
i built this because i NEEDED it and nothing on the market works well enough. there are dedicated solutions, but ours outperforms them because it's a state-of-the-art solution we built in-house that exceeds our internal benchmarks for masking. i use it personally every day on real client work.
what makes ours different:
existing ai solutions give you rough cutouts that don't work for professional use. i took state-of-the-art models and fine-tuned them specifically for masking, then applied learnings from 2 decades of producing high-quality masks to enhance the output through better pre-processing and post-processing.
edges have never been solved. unless you mask individual hairs or shoot on a green screen, you're still limited. magic edge uses ai to reconstruct details that are impossible to mask cleanly - hair against complex backgrounds, glass, transparent materials.
who it's for:
visual effects professionals and editors
content creators who want professional results
anyone working with video who needs clean object removal
my background:
i run a vfx & animation company called Thermonuclear based in Hollywood. I've been programming tools for my team for years, but this is my first public product. I started megaton ai to make blockbuster-grade video more abundant through best in class tooling .
looking for:
feedback from creators and editors on the product. what are your current workflows for masking/rotoscoping? what tools are you using to edit or do vfx and what integrations would you like to see besides a web app?
Okay, 'kill the green screen' is a bold claim, but that 'Magic Edge' feature looks like it might actually pull it off. I signed up for the waitlist to see for myself. I got a code on the page but—heads up—no confirmation email came through, which was a bit confusing. Hope the app onboarding is a little smoother 😉. Seriously though, if this works as advertised, it'll be huge. Looking forward to it.
I like the focus on Masking. It is one of the most desired things to do with video. This makes it easy and clear without having to learn a whole product suite to do one task.
No way—background removal for any video? That’s a total game changer for my YouTube edits. Curious if it handles tricky lighting too—would save me so much frustration!
hey product hunt! we're rolling out access in small waves this week so we can ensure a smooth experience for everyone. ph signups will be prioritized so make sure you join the waitlist today! we'll be reaching out soon with early access.
also comment below with what use cases you're most excited for and we'll try and prioritize those first :)
Love this. I can imagine so many use cases, from the personal to the professional world. Are you guys focused on a B2C use case for this, or is it's for businesses?
Congrats on the launch! AI-powered masking looks impressive, but it’s also resource-heavy. How do you handle performance for users on older devices or without strong cloud support?
