I kept running into the same thing: every home project starts with "how much do I need?", and the answer is never on the bag.
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard, gravel by the ton, concrete by the yard or by the 80 lb bag, paint by the gallon — and the packaging never tells you how far it goes. So you either guess, or you do the arithmetic on your phone in the aisle.
MaterialCalc is four small calculators that do that arithmetic. You put in the size of your area and the depth you want, and it answers in the units you actually buy in.
A few decisions I made along the way:
- Every page shows the formula, not just the result. I wanted you to be able to check the maths instead of trusting a black box.
- The coverage tables are generated from the same code that runs the calculator, so the table and the calculator can never disagree.
- No account, no email, no signup wall. The maths runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
The hardest part was the reference numbers. Bag yields and material densities vary a lot by product, so each calculator uses a middle-of-the-road figure and says so on the page, along with a note to check your supplier's spec sheet.
Next up is probably sod and topsoil, since those are the two people ask about once they've sorted mulch.
