MarkNote — Local-first Markdown Notes
Notes are just files. AI built in. Your data stays yours.
Every note is a plainmd file in a folder — switch editors, back it up, put it in git. No proprietary format, no lock-in. Built-in AI assistant (DeepSeek, no API key): @file references, file read/write agent, conversation history, summarize-to-note. Declarative plugins for rendering & templates (keycaps, mentions, quote cards, terminal blocks, report/PRD templates). Offline render: markdown-it, KaTeX, Mermaid, highlight.js. Native SwiftUI + AppKit, no Electron. macOS 14+.
Hi Product Hunt! 👋
I built MarkNote because I kept hopping between note apps. Obsidian — files are files, but heavy. Bear — beautiful, but your notes live in a private database. Typora — lovely editing, but no AI and no plugins.
So I combined what I liked: every note is a plain .md file in a folder (switch editors, back up, git it — nothing proprietary), a built-in AI assistant using DeepSeek that can reference your workspace files and even read/write them, and a declarative plugin system so the app stays lean: the core is write → view → save; everything else is a toggle or a plugin.
The render pipeline (markdown-it, KaTeX, Mermaid, highlight.js) is fully offline — formulas, diagrams and code highlighting work without a network. And it's native SwiftUI + AppKit, no Electron.
Thanks for checking it out — happy to answer anything!
