Hi Product Hunt! 👋
I'm the maker of makeIcon. I keep a lot of project folders on my Mac, and in Finder they all look the same: rows of identical blue folders. I wanted to recognize a project at a glance by its logo, a photo or a color, without opening Preview, copying and pasting, and fighting with masks every time.
The first version was a small AppleScript droplet I built for myself back in 2020. You dropped an image and a folder on it, and it composited the image into the folder shape with CoreImage. It worked, but it was clunky, so friends kept asking me for "the folder icon thing".
makeIcon 3.0 is a full native rewrite:
• Right-click any folder in Finder, or use the toolbar button
• Pick an image or just a color, and the icon is built in the native macOS folder style
• Apply it to several folders at once
• Light and dark themes that match the system look
Enjoy!
