I built Mailbird because I was tired of paying per email. Most providers charge by volume — fine for 1,000 emails a month, painful at 100,000. My VPS was already sitting there for $6/month, doing nothing with email. So why was I paying $80/month on top of that?
The hard part of self-hosting email isn't the server. It's the deliverability stuff — DKIM, SPF, DMARC, TLS, reverse DNS — all of that has to be set up correctly or your email lands in spam. Mailbird handles all of it for you, on a VPS you already own.
