I’m the maker of LinguaFlick, an app that turns the Mandarin words you want to learn into short video stories.
I built it because I knew how to say 土豆 (“potato”), but I didn’t know what to say next.
When I was learning Mandarin, I’d practice phrases like 下雨了 (“it’s raining”), 买菜 (“buy groceries”), and 多少钱 (“how much?”). The next day, I could still remember them. A couple of days later, I’d forget. And even when I remembered the words, I’d freeze trying to put them together in a conversation.
So I built LinguaFlick. You add the words you want to practice, pick a scene, and get a short story with two voices and bilingual subtitles. You can replay a line, follow the transcript, or select a word to see its meaning and pinyin.
For me, a few words turned into an exchange I could actually say out loud:
你去哪儿买菜了? Where did you go grocery shopping?
我去菜市场买了土豆。 I went to the market and bought some potatoes.
你花了多少钱? How much did you spend?
It was a small moment, but being able to say the whole exchange made me feel more confident speaking Mandarin.
If you’re learning Mandarin, give LinguaFlick a try with a few words you keep forgetting. What conversation would you want to practice first? I’d love to hear it.
