I'm Ilia. Linglass started as my own study setup, and it rests on one idea: you pick up a language by understanding things you actually want to watch — not by drilling lists. The hard part was never motivation. It's that a real video sits just past the edge of what you can follow, and every time you stop to look something up, you lose the thread.
Everything in here exists to close that gap without breaking the flow.
Translation that knows which sentence it's in. The piece I care about most. Click a word and you get what it means here — not a dictionary entry with nine senses to choose between, which is how you end up confidently learning the wrong one. Select a phrase and you get the phrase, not a word-by-word gloss. Every lookup carries phonetic transcription and native pronunciation, so the word enters your head the way it sounds rather than the way it's spelled. It works on any webpage too, not only video.
Ask why a sentence is built that way. An AI grammar breakdown that names the constructions in it, labels each by difficulty so you can tell what's worth learning next, and explains the role of every part in your native language. It opens inside the same popup — you never leave the video.
Both languages on screen, on YouTube and Netflix. And when a video has no captions at all, we transcribe the audio and translate it; when a Netflix title has no track in the language you're learning, we translate one that exists into it. Your input shouldn't run out because a file is missing.
Something to watch at your level. Comprehensible input only works when the input is genuinely comprehensible — a bit above you, not far above. So we scored a catalog, 17,967 videos, ~9,250 hours, for difficulty and sorted it into Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced, each video labelled with its vocabulary load on that language's own scale: CEFR for European languages, JLPT for Japanese, HSK for Chinese, TOPIK for Korean. Every one is checked for working subtitles before it shows up.
Words you save come back. Spaced repetition built in (FSRS, no Anki setup), and each card keeps the video frame and the sentence you met the word in — so you review the moment, not a bare flashcard.
It stays out of the way. This one is a design rule rather than a feature: the video is the lesson. Controls appear where you're already looking and leave when you're done. No leaderboards, no mascot, no daily-quest layer competing with the thing you came to watch.
On your phone too. The iOS app is live — same account, same saved words, same catalog — so you can watch on the train and pick up in the browser. Android is still in the works.
