What inspired me to build this? KidSmart was inspired by my own experience as a parent trying to understand and navigate the UK education system, particularly the 11+ and grammar school preparation journey. I saw first-hand how confusing and overwhelming the process could be for parents, especially when trying to work out what children should study, when they should start, which resources to trust, and how to keep them motivated over a long period of preparation. I also noticed that many learning products either focused too much on passive worksheets or tried to make learning feel like a game without enough educational depth. I wanted to build something that sat in the middle: a structured, engaging, and purposeful learning platform that helped children build real knowledge while still making the experience enjoyable and motivating. What problem wes I trying to solve? The main problem I wanted to solve was the lack of a clear, structured, and engaging way for children to prepare for the 11+ from home. Parents often have to piece together different resources: worksheets, past papers, tutors, books, mock tests, vocabulary lists, and online tools. This can become expensive, inconsistent, and stressful. KidSmart was created to bring this support into one place. The aim was to help children practise Maths, English, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, verbal reasoning, and exam-style questions in a more organised way. I also wanted parents to feel more in control by giving them access to progress tracking, practice materials, tutor support, and structured learning paths. At the heart of the product was a simple idea: children do better when learning feels achievable, rewarding, and consistent. So KidSmart was designed not just to give children questions, but to help them build confidence, stay motivated, and develop strong foundations over time. How did I approach or process evolve while working on this launch? The approach evolved a lot during development. At the beginning, the focus was mainly on creating useful 11+ learning content and practice material. But as the product developed, it became clear that content alone was not enough. Children needed motivation, structure, feedback, and a sense of progress. That led to the introduction of features such as rewards, progress reports, topic-based practice, tutor support, and research-based learning methods like spaced practice, interleaving, and testing before learning. Children were also involved in testing the app before it was fully complete, and their feedback helped shape the experience. This made the product more practical because it was not just designed from an adult’s point of view — it was shaped around how children actually respond to learning. Over time, KidSmart became more than just a collection of worksheets or past papers. It developed into a broader learning platform designed to support both children and parents through the full 11+ preparation journey. The launch became less about simply putting an app online and more about building a trusted education product that could reduce stress for parents, improve consistency for children, and make exam preparation feel more manageable.
