Keygent
Run terminal commands with safely injected env vars
Keygent is a lightweight, zero-dependency CLI tool written in Go that executes terminal commands with temporarily injected environment variables. It uses a direct execution model to run commands safely without polluting your global system environment. Upcoming updates will introduce seamlessenv file parsing, centralized project configurations, and password-encrypted global environment profiles.
Hello Product Hunt community! 👋
I'm Heshan, the creator of Keygent.
As developers, we frequently need to test or run commands with temporary environment variables. The standard approach using export commands or messy shell prefixes often leaves variables lingering in our terminal history or accidentally leaks staging keys into global sessions.
I built Keygent in Go to create a cleaner, safer isolation barrier. It maps your overrides natively using Go's direct execution process (`os/exec`), spins up your target task, and exits without leaving a single trace in your system environment. No shell dependencies, no session leakage.
Keygent is 100% open-source, fast, and cross-platform.
While the core utility is ready today, I am actively building out an advanced feature set for upcoming releases, including:
• Seamless .env and --env-file parsing support.
• Centralized project configuration profiles.
• Secure, password-encrypted global environment stores for sensitive API keys.
I would love to get your feedback on the syntax, implementation, or what features you'd like to see next! Thanks for taking a look and supporting an open-source tool! 🚀
