Hi Product Hunt. I'm Iftikhar, and I build small products in Sydney.
Kakeibo is not my idea. A Japanese journalist, Hani Motoko, published it in 1904, as a way for women to hold real standing over household money at a time when most could not own property. You sort spending into four buckets, you promise yourself a savings number before the month starts, and at month end you answer four questions about it.
It has always been pen and paper, and the people who love it will tell you the writing by hand is the whole point. So why build an app. My answer is narrow: the arithmetic is the part nobody enjoys and the part a phone is good at. The app adds up your envelopes and tracks the promise, then gets out of the way for the reflecting, which is still yours.
Free gets you the method, the monthly plan, the insights, the reflection, and iCloud sync across iPhone and iPad. Sync is free because charging someone for their own data on their own second device felt wrong. Free is ad-supported and capped on goals, envelopes and transactions. Pro lifts the caps and drops the ads.
One thing I want to be straight about. You will see it written everywhere that kakeibo saves you 20 to 35 percent. I went looking for a primary source and could not find one, so I do not print it, and the site I built says so.
