Grounded Q&A lets you ask questions across your entire Zotero library. Instead of re-reading dozens of papers, query all of them at once — and every claim in the answer links back to the exact passage it came from. Click a citation and jump straight to that page in the PDF. No invented references, no hallucinated sources. Free, open source, and it runs against your own library. Built for researchers who need answers they can actually trust and cite. https://github.com/birugit/zotero-grounded-qa
I built Grounded Q&A to fix the part of research I kept getting stuck on: a question comes up mid-project, I know the answer is somewhere in the 40-odd papers I've collected, and I lose an afternoon re-reading them to find it. The AI tools that promised to help couldn't be trusted — they'd summarize confidently and cite papers that didn't say what they claimed, or didn't exist at all.
So I built a Zotero plugin that works with the library you already have.
You ask a question across your papers — a single collection, a few selected items, or your whole library — and it answers in plain language, with every claim linked to the exact passage it came from. Click any citation and the PDF opens right at that sentence, so checking a source takes one click instead of a hunt through the document.
The rule it's built on is the one that matters most to me as a researcher: no claim without a source. If your papers don't actually support an answer, it tells you that instead of inventing something plausible. For work where a fabricated citation can sink a paper — or your credibility — that isn't negotiable.
A few things I know you'll care about: it's free and open source, with no account and no lock-in. Your library stays yours — you can keep everything running locally, so unpublished PDFs and notes never leave your computer.
It's early, and I'd value feedback from people who actually do this work:
Does it hold up on the literature in your field?
Where does it fall short of how you read and write?
Anything broken or confusing.
The code and install steps are linked above. I'll be around all day — ask me anything, and tell me where it gets things wrong.
