I became aware of the GDELT Project (https://gdeltproject.org/) a little while ago, thought it was cool, but a little clunky, so I made GDELT Cloud as a way to more easily access the event and entity data via API and MCP. I soon realized the underlying data while useful can be very noisy, so I ended up coding the events and extracting entities myself with frontier models during ingestion. So, today GDELT Cloud is a bit of a misnomer - I use the GDELT news stream which is great, but all of the structured event data exposed by the API is produced "in-house". Along the way I started ingesting a number of other open data sources, like EDGAR, FRED, GEM, and many more, and am running the opensanctions.org crawlers too (most not all), and iterating on fusing the data in useful ways.
I'm personally just into geopolitics and data, and I suppose GDELT Cloud is an experiment to see how much of the value in the strategic data and intel space can be delivered by a small team (just me at the moment) leaning hard on AI to ingest, process, and annotate, and then make it self serve via API and MCP at a much lower price vs. enterprise sales.
GDELT Cloud kinda aims to be a swiss army knife of open geopolitical data. Organic sign ups and usage have been growing everyday for the past few months (including name brand enterprises), it has some modest MRR, but it isn't fully clicking yet. Feedback welcome - good, bad, ugly :)
