Digitizing a shoebox one photo at a time is why it never gets done. FrontBack scans a whole bedful at once, auto-cropping, straightening, turning upright, and naming every region, then pairs each handwritten back to its front with minimal input. Free, private, no account.
Hey Product Hunt,
I'm Spencer, and I built FrontBack Scanner because digitizing my family's shoeboxes was miserable. Every scanning app treats the scanner bed as one big image, so it's time consuming to scan both the fronts and backs of photos and ensure their namings line up.
FrontBack Scanner fixes:
- Lay a whole bedful on the glass: 4–6 photos at once, crooked is fine. One preview pass finds every print, measures its tilt to a fraction of a degree, straightens it, turns it right-side up (on-device model, 99.8% accurate in my benchmarks), and names it in sequence.
- Flip the pile and scan again: it pairs each back to its front by position on the glass and saves it right beside it (scan_0001.jpg + scan_0001_b.jpg). In back mode it isolates the handwriting.
Free forever. No watermarks, no limits, no catch. It's built by Timeline Scan, my paid service that reads the handwriting you just scanned and dates every photo to its real year. The scanner itself is genuinely free.
Requirements: macOS 14+, ~40 MB.
I'm the only person on this, so I'll be excited to respond to any questions or comments! I'd genuinely love feedback and scanner-compatibility reports.
❤️ Spencer
