Hey Product Hunt! 👋

I’m the maker behind Friend and we built this because we kept asking a simple question.

What if AI companionship felt a little more human, spontaneous, and emotionally engaging instead of just another chatbot window?

Most AI chats today feel transactional. You ask something, get an answer, and leave. We wanted to experiment with something different — conversations that feel ongoing, personal, and unexpectedly fun.

With Friend, the goal is to create an experience that feels closer to talking with a personality rather than operating a tool. Whether it’s random conversations, playful interactions, emotional support, or just killing loneliness for a few minutes, we wanted the product to feel alive in a way traditional assistants usually don’t.

Building this wasn’t easy. One of the hardest parts was balancing personality with usefulness. Too robotic and it feels boring. Too human-like and expectations become incredibly high. We spent a lot of time refining the interaction style so conversations feel engaging without losing the fun and experimental nature of the product.

We know products in this space can be polarizing — and honestly, that’s okay. Some people love the idea immediately, others are skeptical at first. But we think AI companionship and social AI will become a much bigger category over the next few years, and we’re excited to explore what that future can look like.

Would genuinely love your feedback:

  • What was your first impression after trying it?

  • Did any interaction surprise you?

  • What would make an AI friend actually useful or meaningful for you?

Thanks so much for checking us out and supporting the launch 🚀

Comment highlights

This launch means a lot to our team because Friend started as a simple idea:
What if AI conversations could feel less transactional and more alive?
Seeing people actually interact with it today makes all the hard work worth it 🚀

Huge thanks to everyone checking out Friend today 🙌
The Product Hunt community always gives incredibly thoughtful feedback, especially on emerging AI products like this. We’re here all day reading comments, answering questions, and taking notes for future improvements.

We know conversational AI products can spark strong opinions, and honestly that’s part of what makes this space exciting. There’s still no perfect formula for what an “AI friend” should feel like. We’re learning constantly and would genuinely love community feedback ❤️

As part of the maker team, I can say we obsessed over small UX details more than anything else. Response timing, tone consistency, emotional pacing — those tiny elements heavily influence whether a conversation feels engaging or forgettable.

A lot of AI products focus only on productivity. With Friend, we wanted to explore the emotional and social side of AI interaction too. We think this category will become much bigger over the next few years, and we’re excited to help shape it 🚀

One of my favorite moments during development was seeing users voluntarily spend way more time chatting than we expected. That made us realize Friend wasn’t just another utility tool — it was becoming a form of entertainment and interaction.

Really grateful to the whole team today 🙏
Building AI products is challenging because expectations are incredibly high. Everyone compares every interaction to real human conversation. We still have a long roadmap ahead, but we’re proud of this first step.

Something we noticed while building Friend: users instantly lose interest when conversations become predictable. That pushed us to focus heavily on spontaneity, personality variation, and interaction quality instead of just raw AI responses.

I handled part of the product experience side for Friend, and honestly, one of the hardest things was reducing “AI stiffness.” We tested so many conversation styles before finding something that felt playful while still useful. Excited to finally put it in front of real users 🚀

Today’s launch is the result of countless late-night discussions about one question:

How do we make AI interactions feel more emotionally engaging without becoming fake or creepy?
Still a difficult balance, but we’re excited to keep improving based on community feedback ❤️

The most interesting feedback during beta testing was that users treated Friend differently from normal AI assistants. Instead of only asking questions, they shared stories, random thoughts, jokes, and even daily frustrations. That completely changed our perspective on what AI products can become.

Really proud of what the team shipped here 🙌
A huge challenge was making conversations feel natural without becoming repetitive after a few chats. We iterated constantly on interaction flow and memory behavior to keep things fresh and fun.

As one of the makers, my favorite part of building Friend was experimenting with personality and conversation styles. Tiny wording changes dramatically affected whether the AI felt engaging or robotic. It’s crazy how much psychology exists inside conversational design 😅

One thing we learned while building Friend: people don’t always open AI apps to “get work done.” Sometimes they just want to talk, joke around, or feel less alone for a few minutes. That insight changed how we designed the entire experience. Curious to hear how others think conversational AI should evolve 👀

Launching Friend today feels surreal 🚀
We spent months refining tiny conversation details that most users may never consciously notice — pauses, tone, humor, emotional flow — because those small things completely change how “human” an AI interaction feels. Really excited to finally share this with everyone and hear honest feedback from the PH community ❤️
