Fridgie started with a familiar problem: standing in front of a full fridge with no idea what to cook - then finding something expired a few days later.
My first instinct was to build a better pantry tracker. But I quickly realized that pantry apps usually create another chore: typing every product, scanning barcodes one by one, and constantly keeping the inventory updated.
The turning point was the grocery receipt. It already contains most of the information the app needs, and it’s already in your hand after shopping.
So Fridgie evolved around one simple action: photograph the receipt. From there, it builds your pantry, surfaces what needs using first, and creates recipes weighted toward ingredients closest to expiring. There’s also a step-by-step cook mode with built-in timers.
I kept it completely free, with no subscription - reducing food waste shouldn’t become another monthly expense.
I’d especially love feedback on the receipt-scanning experience and whether Fridgie makes deciding what to cook genuinely easier.
