Top comment

FrameGrab started as a tool for looking at UI animations properly: trim a screen recording to the exact frame and export the stills, at full resolution, from almost any video format. Then I started building with AI coding agents, and hit the obvious gap: they can read your code but can’t see how it moves very well with their default capture tools. So FrameGrab now has an MCP server. Connect Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or any MCP agent and it can: • record the iOS Simulator or a Mac app’s window while it tests, • find the moments where the screen changes, • look at every frame of a transition on one contact sheet, with changes boxed and held frames labelled, • measure how far and how fast an element moves, and whether it overshoots. It’s built to save the agent tokens: one contact sheet instead of 60 separate frames. It’s free, with no account and no tracking. Your videos never leave your Mac. If it saves you time, there’s a tip jar in the app, but everything works without it. It needs macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon. I’d love to hear what you’d use it for, and what’s missing.

Who hunted FrameGrab?

FrameGrab was hunted by Jon Darke. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
