I’m the maker of Folk Board Games.
This project started with a question: How many traditional board games are out there beyond the handful most of us already know?
The deeper I looked, the bigger the world became.
There are games that have been played for hundreds of years, games that evolved independently in different cultures, and games built from incredibly simple rules that still produce surprisingly deep strategy.
But many of them are difficult to discover — and even when you find the rules, there often isn’t an easy way to actually play them.
So I started building Folk Board Games.
What began with a few games kept expanding, and the project now includes 80+ playable traditional board games from around the world.
For me, that number matters because I don’t want this to feel like a site for one or two historical games. I want opening Folk Board Games to feel like opening a map and realizing there is an entire world of games still left to discover.
That idea shaped the rest of the experience.
Instead of simply browsing a catalog, you progress through games, unlock new ones, build your collection, learn their rules and background, and challenge AI opponents along the way.
One design question I keep coming back to is:
How do you make exploring 80+ unfamiliar games feel exciting instead of overwhelming?
That’s why I’m experimenting with campaign progression, collections, chapters, AI difficulty, and a discovery-focused structure.
I’d especially love feedback on:
- Was it easy to learn a game you had never seen before?
- Does the progression make you want to discover the next game?
- Is 80+ games exciting, or does the collection need better ways to browse and explore?
- Which traditional game should I add next?
I’m also curious whether the balance between game, learning experience, and digital museum feels right.
