Hold a key, talk, let go: your words land where your cursor is, ums gone and laid out for the app you're in, an email, a chat line, a list or a prompt. 4.6 MB on a Mac, 2.3 MB on Windows, 0% CPU while it waits. $5 a month after a free trial.
Hi Product Hunt! I'm Rohit, maker of Featherweight Dictation.
A dictation app is the one app that runs all day, waiting for a single key. So we asked a simple question: why should it weigh hundreds of megabytes? The dictation apps we measured take 116 to 596 MB on disk. Featherweight Dictation takes 4.6 MB on a Mac and 2.3 MB on Windows, and uses 0% CPU while it waits.
How it works: hold a key (fn on a Mac, Right Alt on Windows), talk, and let go. About half a second later your words are typed where your cursor is, with the ums and do-overs gone, and laid out for the app: an email in Gmail, one line in WhatsApp, a list in Notion, a clean prompt in Cursor or Claude. Your audio and your words are never stored.
It's $5 a month for unlimited dictation, after a free trial of 5 days or 3,000 words, no card needed. Windows landed this week, and one plan covers your Mac and your PC.
We'd love to hear what you dictate, and what would make it better. Thank you for trying it!
