FarPause is a macOS eye-care reminder built on the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Unlike noisy Pomodoro timers, FarPause delivers a calm, minimal break — a soft full-screen overlay with no flashy distractions, designed to get your eyes off the screen. Features: menu bar countdown, global pause, multi-monitor support, auto-pause when idle, and a native macOS experience. Rest your eyes. Look far away.

Hey everyone! 👋 I'm the maker of FarPause. What inspired me to build this: I've been struggling with dry eyes and eye strain from long hours in front of my Mac. I tried every Pomodoro timer and break reminder out there — but they all had one problem: they were too distracting. Flashy animations, bright pop-ups, game-like reward systems — the exact opposite of what you want when your goal is to give your eyes a break. The problem I wanted to solve: Most break tools are designed to interrupt you, not guide you. They scream at you to stop working. What I wanted was something that gently reminds you to rest — without pulling your eyes further away from the screen or adding cognitive load. How my approach evolved: The first version of FarPause had a colorful animated screensaver... until I realized the irony. If the goal is to get you to look away from the screen, why would I put an attractive animation on the screen? So I stripped it all back. Now the rest overlay is deliberately calm — a soft, dark screen with just a subtle prompt. No dopamine hits. No distractions. Just a quiet moment to rest your eyes. One thing I'd love your feedback on: The "Skip" button is hidden by default in Premium — should it be hidden in the free version too? I'm curious about the balance between usability and accountability. Thanks for checking out FarPause! 🙏
