Farewell is an offline encrypted vault for macOS designed for sensitive files. It combines 256-bit authenticated encryption, ML-DSA post-quantum integrity protection, Argon2id key hardening and optional hardware security keys. No cloud, no accounts, no telemetry and no servers. Files stay on your Mac and remain protected by an architecture built for long-term security.

Hi Product Hunt 👋

I’m Denis, the creator of Farewell.

Farewell started with two simple questions:

Why couldn’t a secure vault be as simple to use as any modern Mac app?

And if a file needs to remain private for the next ten years, how should a vault be designed today?

We wanted something we would actually enjoy using ourselves: a vault that stays entirely under the user’s control, works offline, and remains understandable without requiring a security background.

Built-in file viewing, integrated hardware-key support, and a workflow that doesn’t require mounting encrypted volumes.

We built Farewell for situations where a leaked document, a seized laptop, or a compromised passphrase can have serious consequences.

Farewell works fully offline and combines ML-DSA post-quantum signatures, strong key derivation, and optional hardware security keys.

A hardware security key — and up to two backup keys — can be added as a second factor, making access dependent not only on a passphrase but also on a physical device in your possession.

The project is now open source, and I’m currently seeking independent security audits before wider adoption.

I’d love your feedback on the security model, usability, and overall concept.

Did we get the balance right between strong security and everyday usability?

We’re also happy to provide complimentary licenses for the signed and notarized macOS binaries to serious testers interested in evaluating the application.

Thanks for taking a look!

Who hunted Farewell?

Farewell was hunted by Denis Florent. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
