Group buying — the mechanic behind Pinduoduo — has driven Asian ecommerce for a decade, but there was no way to run it on Shopify. A shopper starts a group on a product and invites friends. When the group fills, everyone gets the price. When it doesn't, everyone is refunded automatically through Shopify Payments or Stripe. Installs as an Online Store 2.0 theme block, so there's no code and it works with any theme.

Hey everyone 👋

I've spent the last year building on Shopify, and one thing kept bugging me: group buying drives an enormous share of ecommerce in Asia, and there was no way to run it on Shopify at all.

So that's what Farabiulder is. A shopper starts a group on a product, shares the link, and when enough people join everyone gets the price.

The part I'm proudest of isn't the discount — it's what happens when a group fails. Every participant is refunded automatically through Shopify Payments or Stripe, with zero work from the merchant. That was the hard part to build, and it's the reason merchants are willing to run these campaigns at all. Nobody wants to process 8 refunds by hand on a Monday morning.

The other piece is checkout. A normal discount code leaks — someone screenshots it and it ends up on a coupon site. We use draft orders that lock the deal to the specific people in the group, so it can't be passed around.

It installs as an Online Store 2.0 theme block, so setup is drag-and-drop and it adapts to whatever theme you're running.

Common questions

What is group buying? Several shoppers buy the same product together to unlock a lower price. One person starts a group, others join, and the discount applies once the group reaches its minimum size. It's the mechanic behind Pinduoduo and Groupon-era team buying.

How is it different from a volume or tiered discount app? A volume discount rewards one customer for buying more units. Group buying rewards a customer for bringing other customers, so it's an acquisition channel rather than a margin giveaway.

What happens if the group doesn't fill? Everyone is refunded automatically through Shopify Payments or Stripe. The merchant does nothing.

Does it work with my theme? It's an Online Store 2.0 theme block, so any OS 2.0 theme — Dawn, Sense, Refresh, Craft and others.

Can people abuse the discount? No. Checkout runs through a draft order tied to the specific group participants, so there's no shareable code.

What I'd love feedback on

- If you run a store: what group size and discount would you actually try? We're seeing 5–10 people and 15–25% work best, but that's a small sample and I'd rather hear real numbers than trust mine.
- Has anyone tried running a group buy manually, with spreadsheets and manual refunds? I want to know exactly where it broke for you.

There's a free plan with no time limit, so you can build and run a real campaign before paying anything.

I'll be around all day — ask me anything 🙌

Comment highlights

This is actually pretty clever. Love the idea of making group discounts feel more like a game than just another promo. Congrats, wishing you a big launch! 🚀
