Welcome to the music review app! We are the "Letterboxd for music". You can rate, review and track the music you're listening to. Discover new music from other music obsessives and create a profile with your favorite albums (yes, just like the MySpace Top 8!)
Thank you so much for checking out Factory.fm! We are a team of musicians (including Grammy-winning artist RAC) who wanted to build a deeper space for music.
We are not another streaming service but a place to reflect on the albums that changed our lives and talk about new music we love. Many of our early testers have said it's given them a deeper connection to music and they're listening to more albums because of factory.fm. Hopefully it'll do the same thing for you!
What can you do?
Create a profile and set your Top 8 albums of all-time (it's a hard choice!)
Rate and review your record collection.
Make lists (e.g. the best electronic albums)
Follow your friends and see what they're listening to.
Bookmark albums you want to listen to for later.
The app is available on iOS and Android, or you can use the website directly. Let us know in the comments if you have questions or ideas!
I love music and play it on some platforms but what significantly sets this app apart from any others?
Some additional feature ideas I thought of (not sure if these were introduced by others or in progress, but here it goes!):
Song discovery mode (by genre/mood/etc) that plays a song and you can log it while listening, so it encourages logging releases with more passive listening
Search for singles that are outside of albums as well. I tried looking up songs like "All The Small Things" by blink-182 and it didn't come up unless I clicked into Enema of The State (the album) and dug in to log a release on that.
Maybe rebrand 'log a release' to something like 'review a song' or 'give your thoughts on a song', something that's less technical
Introduce hashtags or communities to find and write about songs in certain genres
Give option to tag your account as an artist and give artists more tools to promote to certain communities and grow their own profile. Maybe give artists tips to review their own music and others and how to build a community
Host challenges to see who the most reviewed was for the day and award points to the profile for the most reviews for a day (that are quality)
Add more social sharing to improve platform discovery
Allow artists certain number of 'featured' credits per month for free to feature their songs in certain placements (like free ad placements) in order to promote singles or logs of their own songs.
Allow users to discover lists and promote their lists like playlists on Spotify in order to grow listenership. Maybe even public lists that everyone can contribute to
Congrats on the launch. This has some real potential. Easily replicable by big streaming services so please tell me how you guys are planning the roadmap?
For everyone who’s wanted to express their love of music in words, here’s the decentralized Pitchfork
This is such a cool idea! Love the focus on deepening the connection with music rather than just streaming, DSPs are definitely lacking a deeper level of curation, and I find myself relying on text messages and Instagram DMs to share favorites - slick!
Very cool idea to get out of the walled gardens of music distribution and marketing to find new hot music releases and undiscovered oldies! I signed up and added my releases.
As an artist myself I would like a way to share and promote my music within the platform if possible. I added my own song releases to my favorites in hopes that will get some exposure, along with some other pop punk bands I love!
I thought of building my own platform that allows artists/music listeners to build/share collaborative Spotify playlists to avoid the walled gardens of gated/paywalled playlisting and incentivize artists/listeners to grow playlists together for free for their own benefit. Instead of building it myself though, even though I'm a software developer myself, maybe you could build it or we could collaborate somehow?
This would be a HUGE help to the music marketing community and help avid listeners discover new artists, all for a much lower cost/effort.
Let me know what you think! Will be following for the latest features regardless!
Well done on addressing the challenge of music discovery! I'm interested in how Factory.fm curates recommendations based on user reviews. What mechanisms do you have in place to highlight the most relevant reviews for each user?
I have a lot of friends among musicians, this idea seems quit interesting to me. How exactly do artists benefit from this app?
As someone who updates my Instagram notes with only music daily, this seems like the perfect app for me! Congrats on the launch!
I like this cool idea. Most platforms are focused on rating and reviewing books and movies, and there are indeed very few for music. This will be a haven for music lovers.
