Remember when websites had visitor counters, guestbooks, blinking GIFs and “Best viewed in Internet Explorer”? Evolution of the Web lets you travel through the internet one era at a time, from the early ’90s all the way to a speculative 2040. Every era changes the design, technology, interactions and culture of the site itself. How many eras of the web do you remember?
Hey PH 👋
If you like strange internet experiments, I’m @ybouane on X.
I build in public, play with experimental UI, and I’ve launched 20+ products this year — mostly because I keep having ideas I probably shouldn’t turn into real websites.
Evolution of the Web is one of those ideas.
I kept thinking about how much of the old internet has simply vanished.
Visitor counters. Guestbooks. “Best viewed in Internet Explorer.” Flash loaders. Glossy buttons. Skeuomorphic everything.
So I tried to rebuild the feeling of watching the web grow up.
Not as screenshots.
Not as a timeline.
The website itself changes.
You start in the early ’90s, move through different eras of the web, and eventually end up somewhere around 2040.
And there are easter eggs hidden all over the site — old-school references, tiny interactions, and internet relics tucked into different eras.
Note: the future gets a little weird.
If you’re into this kind of thing, my X is basically an ongoing stream of experiments like this.
For everyone who tries it:
**What was the first moment that made you think “I remember this”?**

Who hunted Evolution of the Web?
Evolution of the Web was hunted by ybouane. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
