Estheet is a museum in your browser that never closes. Walk an endless hall of 110 of the world's most loved paintings, each hung at its true size in a carved frame. Pinch in until you see the brushstrokes. Tap a painting and a narrator tells its story as the view glides to each detail. Rehang the hall by artist, era or movement, or shuffle it. Satie, Bach and Chopin play as you wander. Free, with no sign-up.
We mostly meet great paintings as thumbnails. On a phone, The Night Watch is the size of a stamp. In the Rijksmuseum it is 4.37 metres wide, and you step back to take it in. Scale is half of what a painting does to you. Screens throw it away.
Estheet gives it back. It is an endless gallery hall in your browser, built with three.js. You scroll to walk.
What's inside
True size. 110 public-domain masterpieces, from Girl with a Pearl Earring to The Night Watch, each hung as large or as small as it really is. Only five giants, like The Last Supper, are scaled down, and their label says by how much.
Real light. The room is baked in Blender Cycles after MoMA's Rothko room. Only the paintings are lit live, so their colours stay true.
Come closer. Pinch in until one pixel of the photograph meets one pixel of your screen. You can see which way the brush turned.
The story behind each work. Tap a painting and a narrator tells its story while the view glides to each detail it mentions. Every behind-the-scenes fact rests on two sources.
Frames you choose. Carved gilt, Louis XIV, Dutch ebony. Modelled and lit, never painted on.
Your own way. Rehang the hall by artist, era or movement, or shuffle it. Ask for any work by name and the hall runs you there.
Music. Satie, Bach and Chopin, every recording free to share, softening when the narrator speaks.
