This is a question that started bothering me a few months ago.
Most discussions about privacy focus on hackers, stolen laptops, data breaches, cloud providers, governments, etc.
But what about something much simpler?
Death.
Every one of us has files we'd rather keep private. Sometimes they're genuinely sensitive. Sometimes they're just embarrassing. Sometimes they're simply personal.
I started thinking:
What happens if someone steals my computer?
What happens if I stop using it for years?
What happens if I die unexpectedly?
I couldn't find a simple tool that would automatically encrypt files after a chosen date or after a period of inactivity, and eventually destroy them if I no longer had control over them.
So I built one for myself.
After using it for a while, I started wondering whether this is actually a real problem other people think about, or whether I'm solving an extremely niche problem that only exists in my own head.
The application is called Eraseme.
It works locally, offline, doesn't require an account, and can automatically encrypt and later destroy selected files based on rules you define.
