Hey Product Hunt! 👋🏻

Excited to introduce Emochi, a voice journal that turns your thoughts and feelings into a living “Mochi” character.

I’m hunting it for Cynthia, Mawuli, and their team. I love how it makes self-reflection feel approachable and creative.

I’ll let Cynthia share the story behind it below!

Speaking your mood out loud and getting a little piece of art back is such a warm idea, and having a doctor behind it makes the reflection part feel much more grounded than the usual journaling apps!

I wanted to add a snippet about the visual design of Emochi.

When working on Mochi the character, we made an intentional choice: Mochi continuously morphs and shifts colour based on your journal entries, often ending up in misshapen, lopsided forms. The idea was to reflect how human emotions aren't clean, symmetrical, or perfect, but in fact wonderfully messy and imperfect. I hope that you find comfort in meeting this quirky little character, and I'd love to hear your feedback on this design~

I am finding the trend spotting feature very useful in showing me things that have a positive and negative impact on my day.

Good luck to the Emochi team!

I like the idea of talking through your day and seeing it reflected in a little character. Can I change the emotion it picks if it gets me wrong? Sometimes the same words can mean very different things depending on how you say them.

Journaling has never been this fun! 🥹 I’ve had the opportunity to try Emochi early, and the mochi character is a super cute and helpful way to visualize my emotional day. I also like that the app helps me see trends and encourages me to journal more and be positive while also being accepting of what I may be feeling. Highly recommended!

can you look back at older entries to see hoe your feelings have change over time?

A bit of a personal anecdote. The last few months, while building Emochi, have been some of the toughest from an emotional perspective. It was our hunch at the beginning that it’s important to journal as an outlet and way to recognise patterns. My use of Emochi confirmed this without a doubt. Every heavy journalling session was easier to manage because with Emochi, I could name my feelings with granularity. And I could see them in a third person and accept or distance myself from negative emotions. The biggest difference was on those days where my journals leaned negative. Seeing that made me consider leaning a little more positive in my next entries, towards hope and gratitude. And the periodic reports helped me tease the patterns going on that I couldn’t piece together before. There are many journalling apps out there, but we still feel strongly there’s still space to help more people. We tried to make it easy to use, and our artist poured a LOT of visual taste and beauty into Emochi. I’m sure you’d enjoy it. Let us know what you think!

Hey Product Hunt! 👋

I'm Cynthia, a doctor and researcher in psychiatry. With my co-founders Mawuli, Vanessa, and James, I built Emochi, a voice journal grounded in affective science.

As a doctor, I've always recommended journaling. Expressing our feelings helps us make sense of them (Pennebaker & Beall, 1986), and talking may work at least as well as writing (Esterling et al., 1994). But after a long shift, a blank page felt exhausting, and a 1–10 mood scale felt shallow.

Emochi is built on three ideas from research:

1️⃣ Naming emotions calms the noise. Putting feelings into words is linked to a calmer brain and body response (Lieberman et al., 2007).

2️⃣ Specifics help. People who can tell their emotions apart tend to regulate them more readily (Barrett et al., 2001).

3️⃣ Noticing matters. Regular mood check-ins boosted self-awareness in young people (Kauer et al., 2012). Emochi turns your entries into shapes so you can see your patterns.

Non-clinical, private, and judgment-free. Emochi supports your personal growth.

We'll be here all day reading your feedback! 💙
