Ember is a notebook for your Mac with AI built in. Everything you tell it becomes a plain file on your own Mac. Teach it a skill once and it remembers. Point it at any AI you want, from Claude to a local model that runs offline. Not one company's AI, locked in their cloud. I am one person building this, and I would love to know any bugs or thoughts.
Hi, I'm Nabeel. I created Ember because I was frustrated with chatbots that forget our conversations. Each lengthy chat consumed my daily limit, and every new session started from scratch. So, I turned to the terminal and had the AI save everything in plain files on my Mac. The folder grew until one day, a new AI read those files and understood my entire story. I found myself asking it, "How did you know that?" That moment inspired the product. I packaged it for those who will never use a terminal.
The concept behind Ember is straightforward. The memory isn't in the AI; it's in the folder. The AI is a guest, and the house belongs to you. You can bring in Claude, ChatGPT, or Google, or run a local model that works offline. You can change the guest at any time. Your files remain in plain Markdown, accessible in any app, forever.
I followed two rules while building Ember. Nothing leaves your Mac unless you invite an AI in. There are no API keys or complicated setups. I struggled with key setups myself, so Ember simplifies all of that.
I'm a college student developing this on my own, and it's currently available only for Apple Silicon Macs. Please let me know what breaks and where I might be wrong.
