There are similar services out there but I was looking for something reliable that would generate m4b files using the latest AI voices that I could store and play back and my convenience. EbookAloud does one thing and one thing well. I've got a large library I've accumulated over the years of material that is public domain or otherwise out of copyright and for which there would be no commercial value in professional narration. It's now possible to have these narrated with voices that don't sound like a robot from the last century.
Finally tried this with a public domain epub and the text extraction handled footnotes way better than I expected. Voice options feel a bit limited, but the m4b output is clean and the whole thing actually finished in a reasonable time.
Privacy-first approach is refreshing, and the M4B output with chapter splits worked great on a long epub I tested. Wish the voice selection had a couple more natural options, but the quality beat every other TTS tool I have tried.
