Downsweep
Sweep installers, duplicates & stale files from Downloads
Downsweep is a free, open-source macOS menu bar app that clears your Downloads folder: installers for apps you already have, byte-for-byte duplicates and files you forgot. Everything goes to the Trash and can be undone. No analytics, no accounts.
Hey Product Hunt 👋
I'm Ghali, and I built Downsweep because my Downloads folder had turned into a graveyard: .dmg files for apps I installed months ago, duplicate PDFs, and screenshots I never opened again.
I didn't want another cleaner that nukes things, so Downsweep only suggests. It looks for four kinds of clutter:
📦 Installers for apps that are already installed
🧬 Duplicates, verified byte-for-byte
🧭 Files sorted into folders by where they came from (mail.google.com, github.com…)
⏳ Stale files: unopened for 30 days, tagged "Stale" in Finder first
You can Sweep All from the menu bar or go through every suggestion in the Review window. Nothing is ever deleted: everything goes to the Trash and can be undone from History. It only looks at the top level of Downloads, re-checks each file before acting, and your files never leave your Mac.
It's free and MIT licensed, for macOS 26 Tahoe:
brew install --cask muhghazaliakbar/tap/downsweep
One heads-up: it isn't notarized yet, so the first launch needs System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
I'd love to hear what kind of clutter you'd want it to catch next 🙏
