Hey Product Hunt! 👋

I built DiskFox because I was frustrated with something about macOS that I couldn't find a good solution for.

My Mac's storage would slowly disappear. I'd check Storage in System Settings, see a huge amount labelled "System Data", and have absolutely no idea what had changed.

I tried existing disk analysers and cleaners. Most were good at showing me what was taking up space right now. But that wasn't really my problem.

I wanted to know what was eating my storage, when it started happening, and whether it would happen again.

That's why I built DiskFox.

It's not really about cleaning your Mac. It's about understanding what's happening to its storage.

Instead of just showing you a list of large files, DiskFox keeps a history of your scans and compares them over time.

For example:

  • What changed? See which files, folders and app caches have grown since your last scan.

  • Where did my storage go? Track storage usage over time instead of looking at isolated snapshots.

  • Why does it keep filling up? See when something you've cleaned starts growing again.

  • Which app is responsible? Identify growing app data and caches, including folders hidden away in ~/Library.

  • What can I safely remove? Review everything before deleting anything, with files going to the Trash first.

One thing that surprised me during development was how quickly some caches regenerate. Spotify's cache, for example, grew back on my Mac within a week.

That made me realise that freeing up 10GB today isn't particularly useful if you have no idea why it disappeared in the first place.

A few things I wanted to get right

I know Mac cleaners don't exactly have the best reputation. There are plenty of apps making exaggerated performance claims, pushing subscriptions or encouraging people to delete files they don't understand.

I didn't want to build one of those.

So DiskFox has:

  • No subscription. One payment, lifetime access.

  • A 14-day free trial so you can actually test it.

  • No account required.

  • No automatic deletion without your review.

  • A few optional anonymous usage counts, which you can disable.

  • Clear limitations rather than pretending it can access everything macOS hides.

And to be transparent, I used AI coding tools extensively during development. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But I designed the product, made the decisions about what it should and shouldn't remove, and test it on my own Macs.

I'm also not claiming DiskFox does something technically impossible. macOS restricts access to certain storage information, and sometimes the cause of storage growth can only be inferred.

I'd rather tell users when something is unknown than make up an explanation.

What's next?

I'm working on DiskFox 1.1, with a more detailed System Data breakdown and alerts when free space suddenly drops.

My goal is to make DiskFox something you can use to understand your Mac's storage over months and years, rather than just running a cleanup whenever you get a low-storage warning.

You can try DiskFox free for 14 days, with no card required. It's $9.99 for a lifetime licence, currently $6.99 for the launch.

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback, especially from people who've tried other Mac storage tools.

What would you want to know about your Mac's storage that existing tools don't tell you?
