Deep Breath Plus
Guided breathing you can follow with your eyes closed
Most of us open a breathing app at the exact moment we can least handle friction: before a presentation, at 2am, in a hospital waiting room. Too often the first breath comes after onboarding, a mood quiz, a sign-up and a trial offer. Deep Breath Plus starts in one tap, and gives inhale, hold and exhale each their own vibration, so you can follow along with your eyes closed or the screen off. Free, no account, records stay on your device. Some screens show ads, never mid-session.
Hi Product Hunt, I'm the maker of Deep Breath Plus.
One night I couldn't sleep, so I opened a breathing app and counted the taps before my first guided breath. It was 7. Welcome screens, a "how are you feeling" quiz, an account prompt, a free-trial offer.
That surprised me. The whole point was to calm down, and I was reading terms and closing paywalls with my heart still racing.
And it's not just a 2am problem. People reach for these exercises right before a job interview, in a hospital waiting room, on a delayed flight, in a bathroom stall before a big presentation. Those are exactly the moments when nobody has the patience for setup.
Deep Breath Plus is my attempt at a breathing app that gets out of the way.
WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES FOR YOU
You lie down, tap Start, put the phone on your chest and close your eyes. A short buzz tells you to breathe in. A double tap means hold. A long buzz means breathe out. You never have to look at the screen.
- One tap to your first breath.
The app opens on your patterns. Tap Start and you're breathing. No onboarding, no quiz, no account.
- Guidance you can feel, not just see.
Inhale, hold and exhale each have their own vibration, with optional sound. It keeps running with the screen off, with pause and stop on your lock screen.
- Techniques with a reason behind them.
Box breathing, 4-7-8, coherent breathing (about 6 breaths a minute), diaphragmatic, equal breathing and a slow-exhale pattern for sleep. Each one tells you what it's for. You can also build your own rhythm, second by second.
Free. No subscription. No account. Your history stays on your phone; I never see it. Some screens show ads to keep it free, but never during a session. Available in 13 languages.
WHY I THINK THIS MATTERS
There's a quiet assumption in wellness apps: the more you engage with the app, the better it's working. More screens, more streaks, more content.
That's true if the product is a meditation course you sit down to on purpose. It's not true for the moment you actually need to breathe. Then the best app is the one you barely notice.
I'll admit I missed this at first. My early versions were all about the animated circle on screen. It took me a while to realize the screen was the part people most wanted to stop looking at.
Two questions for you:
1. Which breathing technique actually works for you, and when do you use it? If it's not in the app yet, tell me the timing and I'll add the good ones as presets.
2. Do you think wellness apps have become too "sticky" for their own good, or am I overstating it?
Thanks for reading. Take a slow breath out before you scroll on.
