Hey Product Hunt πŸ‘‹ I'm Chetan β€” content creator and developer from India. I built this in a weekend. What inspired this: Dowry has been illegal in India since 1961. That law is 64 years old. And yet β€” it's still in roughly every second Indian marriage. Families calculate it almost subconsciously based on caste, state, profession, education, income, and age. Aunties do a 5-second scan and arrive at a number. That number is real, and everyone in the family knows it, but no one talks about the math. The problem I was trying to solve: Awareness essays about dowry don't work. PSAs don't work. People scroll past statistics. So I tried something different β€” build a tool that makes the math visible. Turn the invisible calculation into a number on a screen, with a breakdown of which factor added how much. Suddenly the absurdity isn't abstract β€” it's quantified. How it works: Pick your state, profession, caste, education, income, age β€” and the calculator outputs your "market value" in rupees. There's a Bride tab that shows how a working woman triggers an instant discount in the system. Select Meghalaya, and the whole system flips β€” it's a matrilineal society where the groom's family pays. πŸŽ‰ The data: Backed by World Bank dowry inflation research, NCRB reports, and regional matrimonial market studies. 37 states, 43 professions, real multipliers β€” not made-up numbers. The satire only works because the math is real. How my approach evolved: I originally planned a simple form with a single output. But the more I researched, the more I realized the breakdown was what made it powerful. Showing "+β‚Ή18L for being from Haryana" or "-β‚Ή35L because the bride is a software engineer" β€” that's where the discomfort lives. So I rebuilt the result page around the breakdown cards. Tech: Single HTML file, vanilla JS, embedded data layer, no backend, deployed on Vercel. Built with Claude as my pair programmer. What I'm hoping for: That people share it, screenshot their numbers, and have an uncomfortable conversation with their family about why a calculator can predict their "expectations" so accurately. Would love your feedback β€” especially on the data model, the UX, and whether the satire angle reads clearly. AMA below πŸͺ™
