I'm a full-time Java backend software developer. In my spare time I tend to relax making some games or apps just for myself. For fun. Programming is not only my profession, it's my hobby and passion as well! Crypto Owl is the product of that passion. Being a small-time crypto investor myself, the first app I used for tracking my portfolio was, quite naturally, the good old Blockfolio. It was perfect in it's simplicity. Those who used it remember that very well. When it was gone, I had to start searching for an alternative. Not as easy as I expected, but I settled with one of the free apps from the market. Over time that app grew with features I personally, as a small and mostly passive investor, didn't need or used. Unfortunately, late last year that app announced turning commercial. I started searching for an alternative and got really disappointed. That's when I got a crazy idea of creating my own app: Crypto Owl. I say crazy because for me, as a Java backend developer, creating an acceptable UI and UX was a particular nightmare :) Using free or cheap price discovery services and integrating them in a manner that keeps me within API rate limits was challenge of it's own. It's a hobby / pet project "financed" (yeah, right lol) by small ad banner visible at the bottom of 2 different views. For that reason this app has a limitation compared to fully commercial apps and projects with large funding: all prices are US Dollar only: no support for prices indexed in BTC, ETH or other currencies. Main features I aimed for: - Capability of importing portfolios you exported from 2 other major and established apps. (not sure if I should name them here so I won't). - No paywall - Simple portfolio tracking: adding/deleting/editing buy and sell transactions - Support for at least top 5000 coins (I ended up supporting a bit over 7000) - Tracking token and your portfolio worth over period of a day, week, month, year, or beginning of time. - No AI integration, wallet connections, exchange connections, trading platforms connections. No need to integrate with any 3rd party. - No need to login or create an account of any type - Capability of exporting your Crypto Owl portfolio to a CSV file or simply exporting a migration code that will allow you to use the app across multiple devices. For free! If you are into crypto and you have an Android phone, please check my work and give me your feedback. Creating a pet project always carry a danger of ending up with something too personalized and I'd really like to see ideas, criticism and suggestions from the community.
