Convert to Stills for Google Photos
Bulk convert live/motion photos to Stills to free up storage
A new way to reclaim Google Photos storage. Convert to Stills finds live/motion photos, creates still copies, removes the motion, and moves originals to Google Photos Trash for 60 days. Keep the photo, lose the bloat, and free up space in one fell swoop. In testing, many photos shrink roughly 70-80%, though savings vary. Photos stay in Google Photos. Nothing uploaded.
I built Batch for Google Photos, and today I’m launching a new way to free up Google Photos storage: Convert to Stills.
This is not another “delete your biggest videos” cleanup tool.
Google Photos users usually have three familiar options when storage fills up: Delete memories, Compress the whole library, Pay Google for more storage.
But there is another storage sink hiding in plain sight: live/motion photos.
A live/motion photo often stores the still image plus motion data. That motion is great for a few special moments, but most of us have years of live/motion photos we never actually watch. The still image is the memory. The motion is the extra weight.
Until now, the manual workflow was painful:
Find a live/motion photo
Save a still copy
Check that the copy looks right
Move the original live/motion photo to Trash
Repeat one by one
Convert to Stills does that in bulk inside Google Photos.
Batch can work through selected photos or live/motion photos across your library. It creates still copies, keeps the photo date, removes the motion, and moves the original live/motion photos to Google Photos Trash for 60 days.
In testing, many photos shrink by roughly 70-80%, though savings vary by photo.
As far as I’ve found, this is the first end-to-end way to do this inside Google Photos in one fell swoop.
A few honest tradeoffs:
The still photo keeps the original date
Location and camera metadata do not carry over
The motion is removed
Originals stay recoverable in Google Photos Trash for 60 days
Photos stay in Google Photos. Nothing uploaded.
The idea is simple:
Keep the photo.
Remove the motion.
Free up space.
I’d love feedback from heavy Google Photos users:
Would you use this on selected photos, your whole library, or both?
