My team just created a side-quest computer game and I like the idea of adding comments so the game can be social. My question is: is moderation just yes/no on whether the comment should be posted, or there are other controls under the "moderation" umbrella?
An empty comment box on a landing page is worse than no comment box. The first one that lands sets the tone of the page for everyone after it.
do mentions work for anyone or only people who already signed up on that site? asking bcoz anonymous comments plus mentions sounds like a moderation headache

Docs is the right wedge and also the hardest one. A comment answering a question about the old API sits under the new page forever and reads more authoritative than the docs above it, so the thread quietly turns into misinformation. If a comment can be pinned to the version of the page it was written against, and greyed out when that section changes, that's the bit I'd pay for. Everything else on the list is a widget, that one is a product.
