Growing up, I didn't really have access to tutors. When I did get one, the experience wasn't great — someone who turned up, worked through a few questions, took the money, and left. No real feedback, no support between sessions, no sense of whether anything was actually improving. Outside of class, you were on your own. That changed when I became a tutor myself. I could see immediately what was missing — not just in the sessions, but in everything around them. Parents had no visibility. Students had no structured practice between sessions. And the tutor had no way to track progress across weeks in any meaningful way. So I started my own tutoring company (EquateIt) at university, obsessed with doing it properly: matching students with subject specialists, tracking whether marks were actually moving, keeping parents genuinely informed — not just sending a receipt. The tools to run a tutoring business the right way didn't exist. I was stitching together Google Calendar, spreadsheets, emailed PDFs for homework, and WhatsApp for parent updates. Hours of admin every week that had nothing to do with helping students. The tutoring-specific platforms (TutorBird, TutorCruncher, Teachworks) handled scheduling and invoicing — I tried them all — but none of them touched what actually happens in a session. Tutors still sent homework via email. Parents still got a receipt and nothing else. The business was managed. The learning wasn't. The first version had one goal: streamline my own tutoring business and actually support my students outside of class — not just during the hour they were paying for. I built the scheduling and billing to get the admin out of the way, then the question bank and auto-marking so students had structured practice between sessions. Then session notes and a parent portal so the progress was visible, not just implied. It grew from an internal tool into something other tutoring businesses started asking to use, and white-label followed from there. The origin is personal: I know what it's like to have no access to good tutoring and no support outside of class.
