I'm David, the maker of CipherChronicle. Quick story: every time I needed to play with a classical cipher - for a CTF, an escape room, or just curiosity - I ended up bouncing between three sites. dCode for the tools (but no real explanations). Wikipedia for the history (but nothing interactive). Practical Cryptography for the depth (but English-only, and dated UI).
So I built the thing I wanted: one place to encode, decode, and understand 80+ classical ciphers — from Caesar and Vigenère to Enigma, Kryptos, and the Zodiac killer's ciphers.
What's in the box:
- 🛠 Interactive workbench for every cipher, with deep-linkable URLs (share a fully configured Vigenère in one click).
- 📚 Bilingual reference page (FR/EN) per method: history, principle, worked example, weaknesses, and how to attack it.
- 🧩 Create your own puzzles — generate a grid, share a link, friends solve in their browser. Solutions are stored as SHA-256(answer + puzzleId), never plaintext.
- 🔒 Fully client-side. No tracking, no logging of your inputs, no LLM-in-the-middle. The cryptography happens in your tab and stays there.
- 🌗 Light/dark, responsive, fast (static bundle on CloudFront).
Stack for the curious: Astro 6, React 19 islands, Tailwind v4, Firebase Auth/Firestore (zero custom backend for the crypto logic).
Free tier covers the workbench and all 80+ method pages. There's a paid tier for power users who want unlimited custom puzzles, advanced cryptanalysis tools, and credit packs to unlock harder challenges.
