The idea came from planning trips to Japan and realizing that the moments where I needed Japanese most were often spontaneous. I didn't want to make someone wait while I typed into a translator app, parsed AI results, or flip through lesson notes. Sometimes you just want to ask for a bag, order from the menu, or tell someone about an allergy.
Ironically, physical phrasebooks used to solve this problem really well.
I wasn't looking to become fluent before a trip - I just wanted the right phrase at the right time.
