This one's personal. Back in college at Cal Poly Pomona, I was the tech lead for our campus dining team — and one of my jobs was the invoices. Every week, stacks of Sysco and US Foods invoices came in, and someone (usually me) sat there keying every line to the right GL code by hand. Slow, mind-numbing, and easy to get wrong. The part that really stuck with me came later: I realized we were quietly overpaying vendors and nobody caught it. The answer was sitting right there in the invoices we already had — we just couldn't see it. It took me the better part of a year to find a cheaper source for something we bought every single week. So ChefCode started simple: let AI code the invoices for me. Snap a photo of a supplier invoice, and it reads every line, assigns the GL code, and has it ready for your books in seconds. That alone gives kitchen teams hours back every week. But the deeper I went, the more I saw the invoices as a goldmine. Every one is a record of what you paid — and if you watch that over time, you can catch the price creep and overcharges that quietly eat a restaurant's razor-thin margins. That became the real mission: don't just code the invoice — protect the kitchen's money. Two things obsessed me while building: accuracy (a coding tool you can't trust is worthless — so it learns from every correction you make) and cost (it had to be a no-brainer — it now reads an invoice for about half a cent).
