Chauffeur started from a problem I hit every single day: my "working context" was spread across a dozen windows — the right Excel sheets, the right VS Code project, a handful of Notepad++ files, the browser tabs I actually needed. The moment I rebooted or switched tasks, all of it was gone, and rebuilding it by hand cost me 10–15 minutes several times a day.
So I built Chauffeur: a small background service on Windows that captures the working state of your apps and restores it in one click.
What it does today:
• Saves open files, tabs and projects across Excel, VS Code, Visual Studio, Notepad++ and Chrome/Edge
• Restores a whole named context on demand — perfect for jumping between projects or clients
• Runs as a local background service with a small desktop app + CLI
What it is NOT: there's no cloud, no account, no telemetry. Everything stays on your machine — that was a hard design requirement from day one.
