Chaptery
An authoring tool for novelists with your world built in
Chaptery is a authoring environment for novelists, on Mac and Windows. Your manuscript and your world live in one place: characters, locations, events and the relationships between them, a storyboard to plot it all, and series that share one world. Save a revision at every milestone. Your world and storyboard open in the browser too. When the book is done, export a typeset PDF, EPUB or Word file. One plan with every feature, and a free trial to start.
A novel is more than its manuscript. There are characters to keep consistent, places, timelines and the plot itself. Many writers spread all of that across a writing app, a notes app, spreadsheets and sticky notes, and none of them know about each other.
Chaptery brings it together. You write in the desktop app on Mac or Windows. In your browser, on the same account, you build your world: characters, locations, events and the relationships between them, plus a storyboard to plot it all. You can keep your world open in a window beside your chapter, and a series can carry characters, places and events across its books. When the book is done, it exports a typeset PDF, EPUB or Word file.
I originally built Chaptery because both of my teenagers are aspiring authors and struggled with the available tools. Keeping track of files, notes and out of order storylines was discouraging them from their passion for writing. Then I started following other authors on social media and saw the same struggles, from indie and traditionally published authors alike.
There's a 30-day free trial with one book, no credit card needed. After that it's US$9.99 a month or US$99.99 a year at TryChaptery
I'd love to hear what you think, especially from anyone who has tried to keep a big story straight. What do you use today, and what's missing?
