I built this because every AI app on the market wants to own your data, your model, and your wallet. Carapace flips it: your iPhone is the input, your Mac (or Linux box / Raspberry Pi) is the brain, and YOU pick the LLM — Gemini free tier covers most personal use, or wire up Claude / ChatGPT / a local llama.cpp.
What's actually different:
🦞 **Persistent memory across devices.** Yesterday's conversation on your phone is available today on your Mac. The memory lives in markdown files in `~/.openclaw/workspace/` — human-readable, you own it, you can grep it.
📸 **Vision mode.** Hold up your camera, ask "what is this?" The model sees what you see. Useful for prescription labels, product comparisons, "is this the right cable" moments.
🎯 **Situational context.** Every iPhone request carries your location, motion state (walking / driving / stationary), heading, and nearby POIs. The model knows you're in your car before you have to tell it.
🔒 **Tailscale-native.** No port forwarding. No public endpoint. Your tailnet, your gateway, your data.
🆓 **Free.** Notarized Mac DMG, App Store iOS app, MIT-licensed Linux installer. We have no server. We don't see your prompts. You pay your AI provider directly.
