My partner is into candle making. After showing interest in her craft, I realized that candle making isn’t just a simple hobby. There are so many factors to get the perfect burn: the type of wax, the fragrance, the amount of fragrance, and the wick. Every candle is born from a process of trial and error, refining the recipe until it burns smoothly with just the right amount of scent.
I searched for apps that could help her track burn tests, only to find that most candle makers rely on pen and paper or spreadsheets. So, I built a simple website to help her track these tests. She didn’t like the first version, but I kept refining it based on her feedback. One day, she came back after making another test candle with a big smile on her face—she loved it!
That’s how Candle Jar was born. Now, hundreds of candle makers around the world use it to do more than track burn tests. With Candle Jar, they can save recipes, calculate and optimize their COGs, manage inventory, plan future batches, create production runs, monitor curing times, and even sync with their Shopify store.
Building Candle Jar has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I had to wear so many hats such as UX, UI, Frontend, Backend, customer support, and I am still struggling with the sale/marketing aspect of it all. But it is the first project that has attracted real users—beyond friends and family—and even paying customers.
