After designing thousands of parts, I built an internal DFM tool to catch manufacturability problems before designs went out for machining. Then I kept running into the other side of the problem: every RFQ meant waiting days or weeks for a quote. Shops aren't slow because they don't care. Pricing a machined part by hand from a STEP file takes an estimator hours: features, setups, cycle time, material, then a spreadsheet, often for jobs the shop won't win.
